How to set a ringtone for one contact

Updated: October 2026

A separate ringtone for Mom, your partner or your boss, and you know who is calling before the phone leaves your pocket. First make the ringtone, then assign it to the contact.

Step 1: make the ringtone

  1. Open snipring.com, pick a song, and give the ringtone a name that is easy to spot (for example "Mom").
  2. On iPhone: Create ringtone → Set as ringtone → Use as Ringtone. The ringtone is added to the ringtone list on your phone.
  3. On Android: Create ringtone → Download MP3.

Step 2 on iPhone

  1. Open Contacts and choose the person.
  2. Tap Edit → Ringtone.
  3. Pick your new ringtone at the top of the list and tap Done.

Step 2 on Android

  1. Open Contacts and choose the person.
  2. Tap ⋮ (More) → Set ringtone (on Samsung: Edit → More → Ringtone).
  3. Pick the file from Downloads and save.

Frequently asked questions

How many ringtones can I add?

As many as you like. Each one is saved on your phone and appears in the ringtone list, so every contact can have a different song.

How do I go back to the normal ringtone for a contact?

On the same screen, choose Default.

The contact's ringtone doesn't play. Why?

Check that Silent mode or Focus is off, and that the contact has no separate ringtone in another app like WhatsApp (which has its own setting).
