How to make any song a ringtone on iPhone
Until recently, making a ringtone from a song on iPhone meant GarageBand or a computer and about ten steps. Since iOS 26, Apple added Use as Ringtone, and now it takes under a minute. Here are three ways, from easiest to hardest.
Method 1: SnipRing, nothing to install (fastest)
- Open snipring.com in Safari and tap Choose a song.
- SnipRing finds the chorus for you. Change the start and length if you like.
- Tap Create ringtone, then Set as ringtone.
- In the share sheet, scroll down and choose Use as Ringtone. Done.
Your song is never uploaded: everything happens on your phone.
Open SnipRing
Method 2: a short file you already have
If you already have a clip under 30 seconds as an MP3 or M4A:
- Open the Files app and find the file.
- Long-press it → Share.
- Scroll down and choose Use as Ringtone.
If the song is longer, you need to trim it first. That's exactly what Method 1 is for.
Method 3: GarageBand, for older iOS versions
- In GarageBand, create a new Audio Recorder project and switch to Tracks view.
- Open the Loop Browser → Files tab, and drag the song onto the track.
- Trim it to the part you want, up to 30 seconds.
- In My Songs, long-press the project → Share → Ringtone → Export.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a song from Apple Music or Spotify as a ringtone?
No. Streaming songs are copy-protected (DRM), so they can't be trimmed. You need a file you own, such as an MP3 or M4A you bought or recorded.
How long can an iPhone ringtone be?
To set a ringtone directly on iPhone, the file must be shorter than 30 seconds. SnipRing caps it at 29.5 seconds to stay safely within that.
Do I need GarageBand or a computer?
Not on iOS 26 or later. Use as Ringtone in the share sheet sets the file directly.
How do I set a different ringtone for one contact?
In Contacts, open the contact → Edit → Ringtone, and pick your new ringtone.
How do I check my iOS version?
Settings → General → About. Your version is on the "iOS Version" line.
